Firstly, whatever’s going on in your life that's brought you to my page, let me say that, by seeking help, you’ve already initiated an empowering recovery journey. It takes courage and some work, but you know what they say? A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. You can do this.
You’re going to be looking for a skilled therapist who’s experienced, easy to talk to and able to guide you towards the healing and growth you're seeking. Read on and I’ll answer as many of your questions as I can.
1. How do you know if I’m the right therapist for you?
Therapy is not one size fits all, so it’s worth enquiring with two or three therapists before deciding who to go with. That’s why I offer a free 15 minute first chat where you’ll get the opportunity to briefly express your current situation and get an impression of the kind of therapist I am. I won’t necessarily suggest you work with me. We’ll talk through the therapy options available and I’ll give suggestions about where to turn next.
2. Who I work with?
I offer equal, inclusive and non-judgemental support to adults from age 16 and up. People from all age groups, backgrounds, religious beliefs, professions, sexual orientations, and genders are most welcome.
Over the years I’ve worked with people experiencing major stress and burnout, recovering from many different kinds of trauma, difficulties with self-esteem, body image, self-harm, people living with long-term illness, survivors of domestic violence and childhood abuse, people devastated by grief, and people finding ways to rebuild their lives following prison and homelessness.
3. What therapy I offer and why?
I have spent much of my professional life working within the NHS and I specialised in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in 2012.
It is one of the most effective and scientifically-founded therapies available, and I’m passionate about what it can do. CBT can disentangle severe and distressing situations, especially if supported with good conditions. It is the only therapy with clear, specific tools for breaking out of negative or harmful cycles. Change can happen quickly; often with results as soon as the tools are put into action. It may be a cliche but the more you put in, the more you’ll get out. The tools of CBT help you to take the reins of your life again, and take control of the situation. It’s empowering. Having a specific way to approach things means that you can trust the process. You are in safe hands.
A benefit of working independently now is that I can support the CBT process with my skills and knowledge as a qualified yoga teacher. Together they enable a more holistic approach where we can enquire into problematic thoughts and behaviour alongside practices to help develop awareness, mindfulness and relaxation.
4. How will we work together to help you move forward?
We’ll create a safe space and I'll be there with you to work through any distressing feelings that arise. Maybe you’ll meet specific emotions or it might just be general areas of dis-ease in the body and mind. You might have experienced a difficult life event in the past or one that is happening now. These may take on the form of commonly termed problems, such as anxiety and depression. But sometimes we just don’t know what to call how we feel and that’s okay.
Whether you have the vocabulary to describe what you feel or not, I will support you to open up, understand what is happening and why it might be getting worse. We’ll work through specific problems using a proven set of techniques to get the progress you need. Together we’ll unravel new ways of thinking and acting that will help you to feel better.
Some specific problems you may want help with are social anxiety, generalised anxiety, health anxiety, obsessive thoughts and compulsions, panic attacks, phobias, post traumatic distress, grief/loss, low self-esteem, anger, guilt, shame or body image problems, work-related, relationship difficulties, or sleep difficulties.
If you’d like to find out more then then please send me an email to arrange for a phone call. You’ll find yourself quickly relaxed and at ease with my friendly and open manner.
