In my counselling practice I help clients to gain insight into the internal and external influences which create conflict, stress and worry or which prevent the attainment of desired goals and meeting of one’s needs. Relationships pass through a number of stages (e.g. parenting, children going to school or leaving home, illness or loss of family member) each of which requires that we change. Change however can be very difficult and the support of a third party can make a considerable difference to bringing it about. Other issues such as affairs, depression, anxiety, divorce also raise significant challenges within relationships or for an individuals health. With regard to relationships, individual and family counselling my experience has shown that conflict, stress and anxiety generally arise from gaps in our self-awareness, too great expectations of ourselves, not knowing how to break problematic patterns of behaviour/relating/communication or simply not knowing how to deal with change. Therefore my counselling work mostly centres on discussion in 3 particular areas. 1. Effective communication. 2. Human/family patterns of interaction and how they shape an individual’s values, expectations and interpretation of experiences. 3. Influence of external factors. This applies whether you are an individual, or have intimate relationship or family relationship concerns.
