David Clancy

I am a UKCP-registered Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist, Group Psychotherapist and Consultant Psychotherapist in private practice. I offer individual, couples and group psychotherapy, as well as clinical supervision.

I have more than 30 years’ experience working across NHS and private forensic inpatient services, NHS secondary care psychology services, crisis services, private practice providing training and consultancy to organisations.

Psychoanalytic thinking is concerned with understanding the whole person, rather than focusing solely on a presenting problem, what occurs that we are not consciously aware of. The ways we think, feel and relate to others are often shaped by experiences, relationships that sit outside our immediate awareness. Patterns that can feel repetitive, troubling or difficult to explain to ourselves or other people that may have roots that extend much further back than we realise.

Therapy offers an opportunity to become curious about these patterns and to understand how they continue to influence our everyday lives. I aim to provide a thoughtful, respectful and reliable therapeutic environment in which difficult experiences can be spoken about openly and explored at a pace that feels manageable.

Every person’s experience is different, and for that reason I do not work from a fixed formula or predetermined programme. The work develops through careful attention to your individual circumstances, personal history and relationships. Together, we can develop a deeper understanding of how difficulties have arisen, how they continue to affect you, and how you might relate to yourself and others in more satisfying and fulfilling ways. The intention is to allow the possibility of changes being made that are realistic and long standing.
