Hello, I am Emma.

I am a humanistic, psychotherapeutic counsellor who recognises the importance of an individual’s potential and their ability to experience growth and change. Much of my experience includes working with trauma, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, relationship dynamics, low self-esteem and identity.

I specialise in a type of therapy known as ‘Transactional Analysis’. Transactional Analysis may enable a more structured way of working and it can be very useful for understanding your behavioural and relationship patterns, alongside your  historic ways of coping and responding to them.  Sometimes, these ways  become outdated; in essence they become less effective, leaving you feeling frustrated and disempowered.  Talk therapy can help you to explore new ways of coping and relating – both to yourself and others.

I have a particular interest in identity and what shapes and defines us.  I believe many of us may lose our sense of self at one or more stages in our life. This is often simply due to everyday life events; such as having children, marriage and separation or the death of a loved one. These challenging and disorientating changes can erode your confidence and leave you feeling out of touch with who you thought you were. Once we begin to lose that ‘core’ self, we are less able to calmly respond and cope using our usual strategies.

I often incorporate other modalities and techniques so I may talk with you about nervous system response (fight or flight) or self-compassion, or I may be curious with you about unconscious drives and symbolism in your dreams, for example.

In my other professional role, I have managed a women’s counselling service for a charitable organisation in Winchester for the last 5 years where we offer free counselling to survivors of domestic violence.  This is a deeply meaningful role for me and I have learned much from my work there.

I offer and I am experienced in online therapy which can often suit people by providing a flexible and effective alternative.

I am committed to my continuing professional development and therefore regularly attend workshops and training to enhance my knowledge, understanding and grounding in this field. I am currently in the process of registering as a Transactional Analyst Psychotherapist with the UKCP,  I completed my core training at Masters level for this in 2023.

I feel fortunate to view my role as a therapist as my purpose, not as my job.

Online and/or telephone appointments are available.
