Helen Marshall
At times, we may feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure how to move forward; struggling to cope. Difficult symptoms (such as low mood, anxiety, struggling with sleep, unhelpful thinking, distressing memories) can begin to impact our day to day life. Strategies that once helped may no longer be effective, leaving us caught up in unhelpful patterns or unable to navigate difficulties as we’d like. In these moments, having professional support and a safe space to make sense of your experiences can be invaluable. I offer that space. With care and psychological expertise, I help you explore your difficulties–understanding what is going on for you, where your difficulties come from, and what keeps your problems going. Together, we identify unhelpful patterns of thinking, feeling and doing which keep you feeling stuck. From there, we work together to develop a meaningful way forward, supporting you to move out of stuck-ness and live in line with what matters most to you. I’m passionate about working with people who are motivated to create meaningful change.
My Experience I qualified as a Clinical Psychologist in 2009 and am an accredited EMDR therapist. I specialise in working with people who experience a range of psychological difficulties including: depression and low mood, low self-esteem, anxiety, OCD, eating difficulties, trauma, and the psychological impact of physical health conditions. I have particular expertise in helping people overcome the impact of trauma (including PTSD), whether this relates to a single event or multiple distressing experiences which may have occurred across the life span. I currently work in a specialist NHS trauma service for Military Veterans.
My Approach I offer evidence-based psychological therapy focused on helping you achieve meaningful change as effectively and efficiently as possible. Building a strong, trusting therapeutic relationship is central to my work. Together, we will develop a clearer understanding of your experiences and the patterns that keep your problems going. From this shared understanding, I support you to learn new skills and approaches that enable you to step out of these stuck patterns and instead create positive, sustainable and meaningful change. I have undergone additional training in a number of psychological models and draw on a range of evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Analytic Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (including Acceptance, Compassion and DBT based approaches). This enables me to tailor therapy to your individual needs whilst ensuring our work is grounded in best practice.
I also offer clinical supervision and consultancy. Within my NHS work, I provide supervision to Clinical Psychologists and other health professionals who wish to consider psychological approaches within their work. Please contact me for further details.
