Paula Helliwell
I am a qualified counsellor and hypnotherapist based in Sheffield, offering counselling sessions online, by telephone, and in person. I provide a safe, supportive and non-judgemental space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings and emotions freely, without worrying about what others might think. Reaching out for support can feel like a big step, and my aim is to create an environment where you feel heard, understood and respected.
In our sessions, you are at the centre of the process. I believe that everyone has their own unique experiences and challenges, and I work collaboratively with you to explore what is happening in your life at your own pace. Whether you are feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or simply need someone to talk to, counselling can provide the opportunity to reflect, gain insight and begin to move forward. I specialise in working with issues such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and addiction. These challenges can affect many areas of life and often leave people feeling isolated or unsure of where to turn. Together we can explore the underlying thoughts, emotions and patterns that may be contributing to these feelings, helping you develop greater self-awareness and healthier ways of coping. I also have a particular interest in supporting individuals who are navigating disabilities and the emotional struggles that can accompany them. Adjusting to changes in health, ability or independence can bring complex feelings, including grief, frustration, loss of direction and uncertainty about the future. I aim to provide a space where these experiences can be explored with compassion and understanding. As an RNIB accredited sight loss counsellor, I have experience working with individuals who are directly affected by visual impairment and sight loss, as well as those who support or care for loved ones experiencing these changes. Sight loss can impact many aspects of life, including identity, independence, relationships and future plans. I understand that these changes can bring a wide range of emotions, and I offer a supportive environment where these feelings can be safely expressed and worked through. Before training as a counsellor, I spent 17 years working as a secondary school teacher. During this time, I worked closely with young people with a wide range of needs, including those with neurodiversity. This experience has given me a strong understanding of how differently people think, learn and experience the world. It has also helped shape my inclusive and empathetic approach to counselling, recognising that each person’s journey is unique. My goal as a counsellor is to help you feel supported as you make sense of your experiences, build resilience and develop greater confidence in yourself. Counselling offers the opportunity to pause, reflect and begin to understand the challenges you are facing in a new way. Whatever has brought you to seek support, you do not have to face it alone.
