Rebecca Amey

I am a HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist with over nine years experience of providing therapy in the NHS and private practise.

Within the NHS, I have worked in an adult CBT and community mental health team. Here I specialised in helping people experiencing anxiety, including obsessive compulsive disorder, generalised anxiety, health anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder, phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. I am also trained in EMDR and often use this therapy to help people process difficult and painful experiences that can often underlie these symptoms.

Prior to working in the adult community team, I worked in an NHS weight management and bariatric service. Within this role, I helped people struggling to lose weight by providing a psychological understanding of their relationship with food and their body and a psychologically informed weight-loss approach. I also supported people in preparing for bariatric surgery and adjusting to life post-surgery. I have a special interest in self-compassion and have published research on the role of self-compassion and self-criticism in the context of binge eating behaviour.

With the onset of COVID, I was deployed to provide psychological therapy to hospital frontline staff within the NHS. This involved helping staff cope with the anxiety, stress, burnout, grief and trauma reactions triggered by the COVID pandemic.

My approach

I hope to offer a warm, supportive and non-judgemental space. I am experienced at providing thorough and thoughtful psychological assessment and formulation and delivering effective evidenced-based treatment for adults who are experiencing a wide range of emotional difficulties; including anxiety, stress, burnout, low mood, adjustment to loss, eating difficulties, emotional eating, IBS, work-related and relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, sleep difficulties and distress stemming from traumatic experiences.

As well as EMDR I am trained in and offer Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy and attachment theory, tailoring therapy to meet individual needs and preferences.

I understand making the decision to start therapy and finding the right therapist can feel daunting and overwhelming.  Please feel free to email any questions you might have, and we can also organise an initial free call to see if I might be a good fit for you.
