Recognising mind and body as inseparable, Somatic Therapy gives space for what the body holds and can be an effective therapeutic approach for many people, bringing new insights to old problems and life experiences.
We often speak of having a body as if it were separate, but the body is where you experience your thinking-feeling self, though stressful and sedentary lifestyle can silence the body until 'symptoms' can no longer be ignored.
Somatic therapy views symptoms not as random intrusion into your life but as the language of your body, it's non-verbal communication calling for attention. My role as a somatic therapist is to encourage a curiosity to 'be with' these body-mind signals so that understanding and insight brings integration which in turn leads to a change.
Whilst a somatic approach to therapy anchors itself in the body's experience, dialogue plays an important role in all sessions, acting as a bridge between the familiar (mind) and the unfamiliar(body) whilst also building connection between us as therapist and client. Movement and clothed touch can also play an invaluable role in re-establishing body-mind connection and this is agreed between us as the session unfolds collaboratively.
We are bringing the separated parts of ourselves together, returning to wholeness; an undertaking that benefits from the compassionate companionship of therapeutic relationship, an attitude of curiosity and invariably some humour!
Our work together can be short or long term with the regularity of sessions being agreed between us to best suit your needs and circumstance. I work from Clifton Village Practice Rooms on Tuesdays and Wednesdays - afternoon/early evening - please get in touch about my current availability.
I offer a free 15-minute phone call to answer your questions about somatic therapy and in the first instance I usually recommend an Introductory session (60 minutes/ £60.00) and then a minimum of 3/6 sessions (£170/340) to see how our work together might support you.
As a Registered Somatic Therapist with ISMETA with a Diploma as an Integrative Bodywork and Movement Therapist with IBMT (visit my personal website listed above), I meet and uphold ISMETA's high Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics and undertake regular supervision.
