Dr Andrew Bamber has worked as a Clinical Psychologist since he qualified in 2012 from the University of Hertfordshire and is registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC). Andrew specialises in working with young people who experience complex emotional and behavioural issues, along with their families. Andrew supports young people in relation to a range of underlying needs such as learning disability, physical disability, Autism and ADHD.
Andrew has held highly specialist NHS roles in Hertfordshire, Bristol and Gwent, where he has undertaken complex assessment and treatment work. Andrew is experienced in supporting families, schools, hospitals and care homes to assess and understand the underlying issues that lead to emotional distress and behaviours of concern in the context of learning and physical disability, Autism and ADHD. Andrew draws on his understanding of Behavioural, Systemic Trauma and Attachment models and has further therapeutic training in Systemic Family Therapy, Positive Behaviour Support and Circle of Security.
Areas of Specialist Experience - Andrew aims to establish a shared understanding of a young person's needs and generate a coherent care plan to support the management of complex behaviours of concern, in order to improve the quality of life for the young person and their family.
Andrew is highly experienced in working with children or all ages to support with their needs, such as family relations, anxiety and low mood, anger management, sleep training, avoidant and restrictive food intake disorder, and support with feeding and toileting for children with complex additional needs. Andrew is trained in Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) by the British Institute of Learning Disabilities (BILD), and has further assessment training in the Autism Diagnostic Observation Scheule (ADOS) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview (ADI-r).
A large part of Andrew's clinical practice has been in developing, running and supervising workshops and psychological therapy groups for both families and for the professional networks who support them. Andrew can provide teaching and training to individuals and organisations on a range of needs including Learning disability, Autism, ADHD, Attachment and trauma, anxiety and depression.
Therapeutic Approach - Andrew has a playful and creative approach to working with children and always puts the child and family and the centre of his psychological approach. Andrew adopts a strengths-based approach to coproducing the assessment and treatment with the family. Andrew uses a range of approaches including Positive Behaviour Support, Attachment informed approaches, Family Therapy, and Narrative Therapy depending on the needs of the child and family.
