About Me: I am a trainee Psychotherapist offering individual Psychotherapy from my practice in Exeter. Currently, I am in my second year of a four-year Post-Graduate Diploma studying Core Process Psychotherapy. Over the last decade, I have been studying Psychology both academically and practically. I have always had an interest in talking therapy and different forms of support, so after completing a BSc in Psychology, I decided to look at the implementation of Psychology through different voluntary and paid experiences. I have volunteered with the charity Mind, as a call-handler, with specific training in suicide de-escalation and transgender issues. I worked as a Recovery Worker in a prison managing a caseload of 50 or more clients who struggled with their substance use. I then moved to work with Unaccompanied Asylum-seeking Children as a key worker trying to help them gain independence in the UK after going through extremely traumatic situations. Finally, I am currently working with young people who struggle with strong presentations of Autism and ADHD, therefore needing full-time support. During my time working in these different social care sectors, I have found it increasingly difficult to see that the mental health of the people I cared for was often neglected when it was actually the source of much of their suffering. Experiencing this encouraged me to study Psychotherapy to strengthen my abilities to help those who are suffering from different struggles. This brought me to study with the Karuna Institute.
My Approach: Evidence repeatedly suggests that the relationship between the client and therapist is at the forefront of what makes therapy effective. Therefore, the mode of Psychotherapy I do, addresses the question of how you and I are feeling in each other's presence as we explore what may have brought you to therapy. With this in mind, I feel as if it is integral that I offer a free initial session so that we can see if we might work well together. More about the approach is that it is humanistic, which means that we can explore many different areas of what it is to be human, and what might help you; and integrative, which means we can explore a mixture of approaches best suited to your individual needs. Alongside these elements, our session will be underpinned by maintaining mindfulness throughout. This doesn't mean we always have to be mindful, but I will ask you to attend to how you might be feeling in the present moment. This could be in regards to your senses, or your body or the quality of your thoughts. This might sound like a lot, but I truly believe that having this open approach can allow a positive therapeutic relationship to form.
