In general, acupuncture encourages physical and emotional wellbeing by restoring balance to the body and mind. A branch of traditional medicine, it has been practised in China and the far east for thousands of years. It involves the insertion of very thin needles through the skin at specific points on the body. In the West, acupuncture is most commonly used to treat pain and musculoskeletal issues. However, it is increasingly being used for anxiety and mental health, insomnia, fertility, menopause and general wellbeing. It is also effective in supporting many long-term health conditions such as chronic fatigue.
A growing body of evidence-based clinical research is discovering how the body responds to acupuncture and its benefits for a wide range of common health conditions. Acupuncture is recommended by the NICE guidelines to relieve chronic pain, including migraine, IBS and musculo-skeletal pain, and is recommended by the World Health Organisation for a wide range of conditions, including arthritic pain, neurological disorders, anxiety and sleep.
